A festival celebrating the diversity of piano music, featuring a series of workshops with Joshua Kelly (on improvisation, minimalism and performing Mozart), a competition judged by Will Pickvance with three age range categories (primary for 11 and under, secondary for 16 and under, and senior for 18 and under) and a closing prize giving concert.

Players of all abilities are invited to perform in all categories of the competition.

The competition will be judged by Will Pickvance, who has established international acclaim for his ‘The Anatomy Of The Piano’ show. A broad skilled pianist, with a background in both classical and improvised music, he work has been described as “almost poetic … his piano playing exudes an effortless, almost careless, expertise” . Will Pickvance has been invited both for his pianistic expertise, but also for his embrace of wide reaching styles, which will allow for an encouraging experience for pianists of all musical backgrounds.

Workshops and Masterclasses: Senior Masterclass: A two hour masterclass on performing Mozart’s Piano Sonata in Bb Major k. 333. Participants may wish to prepare part of this work and actively participate in the session, but similarly the event is open to those who wish to just observe. Secondary Workshop/Masterclass: A hour long interactive workshop on Introducing Minimalism, which will explore the concepts of minimalism and look at key works. In addition, there will be an exploratory look at the prepared piano. Primary Workshop: An hour long engaging session introducing primary aged students to improvised piano playing. Joshua Kelly will lead the senior and secondary workshops.

Joshua Kelly is a highly regarded classical pianist, both as a solo and chamber ensemble performer. In the year of his graduation (2014), he came first place in both the Besbrode Piano Competition and the Leeds College of Music Concerto Competition. From then on, his performing career has gone from strength to strength. This year alone has seen Joshua perform a number of concerts at the International Chopin Music Festival in Warsaw, Poland and at the World Piano Conference in Serbia, to name just a couple of his many concert engagements.
