Resting on the stunning grounds of Thorpe Underwood Estate, on the countryside outskirts of York, The King's Theatre benefits from both an idealistic setting and terrific road links.
The King's Theatre is proud to host and support a variety of different performers and groups. As well as an annual programme from Queen Ethelburga's Collegiate, the theatre welcomes local schools, professional touring companies and our own King's Performing Arts Academy.
We're proud to offer a wide array of shows to please everyone including plays, musicals, pantomimes, concerts, comedy gigs, dance recitals, gymnastic displays and cinema film screenings. From our York-based theatre, we also host outdoor film screenings and outdoor theatre in our very own walled 'Secret Garden'.
We’re proud to work as part of the QE team to showcase the work created on-site by gifted students in events such as The Annual Gym and Dance Display but also all the school theatre productions and concerts.
We're also thrilled to host their community projects such as the Local Community Choir Festival and the Local Community Choral Speaking Competition.
For a second successive season, we’re excited to be welcoming a number of touring professional work as part of our 2021-22 theatre season. A treat for the local community, there are productions for adults, family and children ranging from plays and musicals to pantomimes, concerts, cinema screenings and tribute performances.
We also showcase theatre productions from our performing arts academy as well as local York-based and touring talent such as swing and big bands.
The York theatre is home to professional set-up including permanent seating, stage and screen options.
Our outdoor, walled garden area is perfect for hosting outdoor cinema and theatre productions.
Our theatre is home to our Saturday morning performing arts academy, King's Academy, which is open to local students around York aged 6-18 years.
Here at The King's Theatre, you’re certain to find something for all ages and all interests. We strive to offer a varied and engaging programme every year as we hope to welcome as many people as possible through our theatre doors.
We are so passionate about creating opportunities for everyone to engage with the arts and the theatre is such a great local venue for York, Harrogate and Boroughbridge as well as so many surrounding towns and villages. We're committed to bringing high-quality entertainment to the area and hope that you can pay us a visit this season.
We wish to share a huge thank you to Queen Ethelburga's Collegiate for allowing us to offer such a fun and vibrant season to our local community. Throughout my time here, I have found The King’s Theatre to be a wonderful venue to support our goals to offer a fantastic programme of drama, music, dance, comedy and film. In particular, it has been so amazing to launch cinema film screenings both within the theatre and outside in The Secret Garden. We hope to continue this partnership and bring a series of classic films to York and the surrounding local public.
We would also like to take this opportunity to thank everyone who has visited or supported the theatre over the 2018-19 season. We hope to see you all again soon and hope you will join us for a new season and the launch of our outdoor plays.
We greatly appreciate receiving suggestions and feedback on all things to do with our theatre, so please share them before or after a visit.
To keep updated with all the latest news and events, including our exciting cinema and play schedule, please sign up to our mailing list and/or follow us on social media.
We very much hope to see you soon! Please feel free to spread the word about our York area theatre.

It is with great pleasure that we launch the King’s Theatre season for 23/34
Our aim this year is to make live performance accessible to everyone – to our amazing QE family and friends but also to the wider community.
The King’s Theatre is a venue that celebrates the work of QE students but also professionals from around the country and its doors are open to all.
There is something for everyone: family theatre, live music, open air performances, QE student work and a mini festival for the youngest theatregoers amongst us.
